Bitter in this case is an English term describing a pale ale, and not the bitterness of a beer. Bitters are in fact fairly malt forward.

Fun Facts: Ordinary Bitters were traditionally made from the run-off from the mash of a larger beer, like an English Barley Wine, in a form of brewing called Party Gyle.
